When to go to Panjin: a seasonal guide
Spring and early summer: April to June
Panjin wakes up slowly. March is still cold, with a high of just 8°C and icy nights. By April it's mild and dry enough for walking, and May is the sweet spot. Days reach 24°C, nights are cool, and rain is light.
June is warmer and wetter, but still pleasant. You'll get showers on about every other day, so keep a plan B for the afternoons.
This is a good window for the Red Beach (Honghaitan), a wetland where seepweed (a salt-loving plant) is just starting to grow. It's green rather than red at this point. Bird fans should come in spring too. The Liao River delta wetlands sit on a major migration route, and cranes and gulls pass through.
Midsummer: July and August
These are the hottest and wettest months, and they're close to equal. July tops out at 30°C, and August brings the heaviest rain at 168 mm. Humidity is high, the sky is often grey, and you get fewer hours of sun.
It's also the main domestic holiday season, since Chinese school holidays run through the summer. Expect more local families at the wetlands and a bit more crowding at hotels. If you can pick another month, do. If not, plan outdoor time for the mornings and keep the afternoons for indoor food stops. Try the river crab, which Panjin is known for. Crab season is a big deal here, and it's at its best in autumn.
Autumn: September and October
This is the best time for most trips. September matches May for comfort, with highs around 25°C, and October is crisp and dry. The Red Beach is the main reason to come. In autumn the seepweed turns deep red, and the boardwalks fill with photographers. Late September into October is usually the peak, so weekends can feel busy. Early October also includes China's National Day holiday week, when travel across the country surges. Avoid it if you hate crowds.
Travelling with kids? October's gentle days make long walks on the boardwalks easy. Crab is also in season, so you can eat well.
Winter: November to February
Winter is cold and long. From December to February, highs sit at or below freezing, and nights drop to -14°C in January. Skies are fairly sunny and dry, but the wind off the Bohai Sea can feel sharp. The wetlands turn quiet and many outdoor sights lose their appeal. Come only if you want empty places and don't mind the cold. November is a fair shoulder month, but it's chilly.
