April: cool spring days

April feels like a real step into spring in Shenyang. Afternoons can be pleasant for walking, but mornings and evenings still feel cold, so the day can change quickly. It's much milder than March, while May is warmer and wetter. Rain tends to come in occasional spells rather than dominate the month.

The longer daylight suits a visit to the Shenyang Imperial Palace and the historic streets around it. You can also walk the grounds of Beiling Park, though trees may not yet look fully green. Save long outdoor days for dry weather, and don't count on warm evenings for sitting outside.

Qingming and crowds

Qingming Festival falls in April. Families visit ancestors' graves, and some people take short trips, so transport and popular sights can be busier around the holiday. The date changes each year.

Outside that holiday, April is generally calmer than May and September, two of Shenyang's best-known months for visiting. You may find less pressure on hotels and attractions than in those busier periods. If you hate crowds, avoid travel around Qingming and visit the Imperial Palace on a weekday.

Travelling with kids? Beiling Park's wide paths make for an easier outdoor outing than a long hike, but the air can still feel chilly near the start or end of the day.

For a sheltered break, try a bowl of *laobian dumplings*, a Shenyang speciality, near the city centre. April brings some rain, so pairing a museum visit with a meal works well when the weather turns. Check the Qingming holiday dates before choosing your travel days; even a quiet spring visit can feel busier then.
