Visiting Changchun in March
March feels like winter
March is spring on the calendar, but Changchun still feels wintry. Days reach about 4°C, while nights drop to around -8°C. The air is often dry, and rain is limited, but icy patches can linger as snow and ground begin to thaw. You'll get more daylight than in February, though the cold can make long outdoor days tiring.
The Puppet Emperor's Palace and the Changchun Film Studio Museum make good stops when you want a warm break. You can also stroll around Nanhu Park on a sunny afternoon, but don't count on soft paths or comfortable conditions for a long walk. Save serious hiking and relaxed park time for later in spring.
Quiet streets, few big events
March is generally a quieter, lower-season month than May and September, Changchun's best-weather months. You're likely to find fewer visitors and better-value stays than during those popular periods. There isn't a major fixed citywide festival to draw crowds in March. International Women's Day falls on March 8, but it isn't a public holiday in China.
If you hate crowds, March can suit you—just trade busy sights for cold evenings and a less lively outdoor scene. The weather shifts quickly toward milder days in April, so March is best for museums and short outings rather than a full schedule outdoors.
Make the cold work for you
For a practical warm-up, try a bowl of guo bao rou, a famous sweet-and-sour pork dish from nearby Harbin that's also easy to find in Northeast China. It's a filling choice after time outside. At Jingyuetan National Forest Park, stick to shorter walks near the entrance if paths look icy or muddy; don't plan a full day on forest trails. The park is a better bet once spring has properly settled in.
