Changchun Weather in December

December: deep winter

Changchun is properly cold in December. Highs reach about -9°C, while nights fall to around -19°C. There's little rain, but the cold can make long stretches outdoors feel tough. You'll get just under nine hours of daylight, so sightseeing days are short.

The Palace Museum of the Manchukuo State and the former Film Studio are good choices when you want indoor time. Jingyuetan National Forest Park is better for snow activities than a long walk through the woods. Save relaxed outdoor exploring for May or September, when Changchun's weather is far kinder.

Snow fun and festive lights

Ice and snow attractions around Jingyuetan are a seasonal draw, though opening dates can vary with conditions. In the city, shopping centres may put up Christmas decorations, but December 25 isn't a public holiday in China. Don't expect a citywide Christmas break or a guaranteed festival schedule.

If you hate crowds, go before the New Year rush. December is generally quieter than the warmer months, and demand rises around popular snow attractions and the holiday period. Prices can be lower in this winter low season, but don't assume every hotel or activity will be cheap.

Make the cold work for you

Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor plans short, then warm up inside at a café or a museum near Renmin Square. Avoid building your day around long outdoor walks; icy paths and early darkness can make them tiring.

For a local winter treat, try a bowl of hot guobaorou, Changchun-style sweet-and-sour pork, after visiting the Puppet Emperor's Palace. If you're heading to Jingyuetan, check its current snow-activity arrangements before travelling across town. December's limited daylight and sharp cold make a wasted trip feel especially long.
