May weather in Changchun

May is one of Changchun's best months to visit. Afternoons feel mild, with highs around 22°C, while evenings cool to about 8°C. Spring is in full swing, and the long days give you time to explore.

Rain falls on about 10 days, so a dry morning can turn showery. The city's parks and the grounds of the Puppet Emperor's Palace suit a mix of walking and indoor sightseeing. Save long outdoor plans for a clear spell, rather than relying on a full day of dry weather. May is wetter than April, but June brings more rain.

What to do and when

Take a stroll through Nanhu Park or visit the Changchun Film Studio Museum. Both work well in mild spring weather, and the museum is a good fallback when rain sets in. You can also try local dishes such as guobaorou, sweet-and-sour pork that's a Jilin favourite.

May Day, China's Labour Day holiday, brings a busy travel period. Expect more visitors and higher prices around the holiday than on ordinary May weekdays. Outside that spell, May is a shoulder-season choice, before summer's heavier rain.

A local tip

At Jingyuetan National Forest Park, you can trade city streets for pine woods and lakeside paths. It's a pleasant choice on a clear day, but rain can make a long walk less appealing. Check the forecast before making it your main outing.

Bring a small umbrella for wandering around Guilin Road's shops and food spots. May's rain is spread across the month, so it can catch you between sights. Even with showers, the mild air and spring greenery make this a strong month for a Changchun city break.
