WettestFebruary · 407 mm

Weather-wise, August and September is the best time to visit Jakarta. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 29°C and 31°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over December to March; February is the wettest month with about 407 mm (16.0 in) of rain. December is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.

When to go to Jakarta: a seasonal guide

Two seasons, and one is wet

Jakarta sits just south of the equator, so temperatures barely move all year. It's hot and sticky every month. What changes is the rain. From December to March it falls on almost every day, and February is the wettest month. Streets flood in some districts, and traffic, already slow, can crawl for hours.

The dry season runs roughly from June to September. Skies clear, the air feels lighter, and you get real sunshine. August is the driest month, with September close behind. Both are our top picks.

Which month for which trip

If you want to walk around Kota Tua, the old Dutch quarter, or spend a day at the National Monument (Monas), go in August or September. You can stand outside without watching the sky. July is also decent. June is a fair shoulder month, but it still rains on about two days in three.

Mostly here for malls, museums and food? The wet months work fine. Much of Jakarta's fun is indoors, from the big malls around Senayan to a bowl of soto betawi, a rich beef soup with coconut milk. Just keep your plans loose and use the MRT or TransJakarta busway when roads clog. Boat trips to the Thousand Islands are best in the dry months, when seas are calmer.

October is a trap. It looks sunny in the data but the rains return fast, with showers on most days.

Crowds and events

Jakarta isn't a beach resort, so it has no sharp tourist peak. The real crowd factor is Indonesian holidays. Around Eid al-Fitr (the end of Ramadan, date moves each year), many residents leave for their home villages. The city goes oddly quiet, and many shops close for a few days. It's a strange but calm time to visit.

Independence Day on 17 August falls in the best weather. Expect flags everywhere, street games and neighbourhood contests. The Jakarta Fair at Kemayoran, a huge fair with food, music and shopping, usually runs from mid-June into July. On New Year's Eve, Sudirman and Thamrin roads fill with people, but December rain can spoil the party.
