When to go to Semarang: a seasonal guide

The dry season: June to September

If you want the best odds of a dry day, come between July and August. Those two months score best here. Rain falls on only 6 to 8 days a month, and the afternoons are bright enough for a proper walk through Kota Lama, the old Dutch quarter. Mornings are the kindest time to be there. By midday the stone streets hold the heat.

August is the driest month, but September is the hottest, reaching 35°C. It's dry, dusty and strong in the sun. Plan indoor stops like Lawang Sewu, the old railway headquarters with its cool, long corridors, for the middle of the day. Save Sam Poo Kong, the big Chinese temple complex, for late afternoon when the light softens.

June is a fair month and a good pick if you want slightly fewer people and a little more green.

The wet season: December to February

Be honest with yourself here. It rains on almost every day in January and February, often for hours, and the sun barely shows. Semarang is a low coastal city, so some streets near the port and in the lower districts can flood. Kota Lama is one area where water can pool.

Is it worth it? If you're here for food and don't mind a soggy day, maybe. Try lumpia (fried spring rolls with bamboo shoot) and tahu gimbal (fried tofu with peanut sauce) while the rain drums on the roof. Otherwise, skip these months.

The in-between months

March to May and October to November are rated poor. March and April are still very wet. May is the easing month, with rain on 18 days. October is hot and muggy, and the rain returns bit by bit. November is wetter again.

These months suit you if you're on a budget or you're here for work and just need a few dry gaps. Pack a small umbrella and keep plans loose.

Crowds and events

Semarang isn't a big tourist magnet, so there's no real high-season squeeze. Hotels fill more around Indonesian school holidays in late June and July, and around Eid al-Fitr, when many families travel. Roads and trains get busy then, so you'll want to sort out train tickets early.

Dugderan is the big local event. It's a carnival before Ramadan, with a parade and the dugder drum-and-cannon sound that gives it its name. The date moves each year with the Islamic calendar. Chinese New Year also brings lanterns and crowds to the Pecinan (Chinatown) area, usually in the rainy months.
