Best Time to Visit Jepara

The wet months: December to March

Jepara's rainy season is properly wet. January and February each get close to 400 mm, and it rains on almost every day of the month. Sun is rare, and the air feels thick and sticky even at night, since lows barely drop below the high twenties.

Roads can flood along the north coast, and ferries to Karimunjawa, the island group off Jepara's coast, are often cancelled when seas get rough. If you come now, plan for indoor stops. The carving workshops around Tahunan and Mulyoharjo, where Jepara's famous teak furniture is made, are a good way to spend a grey afternoon.

The dry months: June to September

This is when you want to be here. July and August are the driest, with August just ahead at 32 mm over six rainy days. Skies are brighter, the humidity eases, and evenings are a touch cooler. June is fair but still has a few showers, and September is good, with rain creeping back.

Beach lovers should aim for this window. Bandengan Beach is easy to reach and has calm, shallow water for kids. Travelling to Karimunjawa for snorkelling? Seas are usually kindest now, so it's the best time for boat trips. Hiking Mount Muria, the old volcano north of town, is also much nicer on dry trails.

Crowds and local events

Jepara is not a big international stop, so crowds come from Indonesian holidays. Beaches like Bandengan fill up on weekends and during the school break around late June and July. Karimunjawa gets busiest then too, so you'll want your boat and room sorted early. Around Eid al-Fitr, many Javanese travel home, and the town and beaches get very busy. The date moves each year, so check it before you pick dates.

Jepara is also the hometown of Kartini, the women's education pioneer. Kartini Day on 21 April is marked with parades and people in traditional dress. It falls in a showery month, but rain tends to ease off compared with winter.

The in-between months

April, May, October and November are mixed. May and October are fair bets if you want fewer people. Expect some downpours, but also some sunny hours. By November, the rains are back in force, with rain on most days.
