Best Time to Visit Surabaya
Indonesia · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
If you want the most pleasant weather in Surabaya, plan your trip for July and August. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 29°C and 34°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over December to April; February is the wettest month with about 346 mm (13.6 in) of rain. January is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.
When to go to Surabaya: a seasonal guide
Dry season: June to October
Surabaya's best stretch runs from July to September. August is the driest month, with just 13 mm of rain on about three days. Skies are mostly clear, and the air feels lighter than the rest of the year.
It's still hot. September and October are the warmest months, with afternoons around 34°C. Walking Jalan Tunjungan or the old Arab quarter around Ampel Mosque is best in the morning or after the sun drops. Midday is for malls and air-conditioned cafés. June is a fair month, and October starts to turn wetter.
If you're heading to Mount Bromo, this is your window. Roads are clearer and sunrise views over the crater are more likely. Surabaya is the usual gateway city, so you can pair a few city days with a Bromo night in the same trip.
Wet season: December to April
Be honest with yourself here. January and February bring around 340 mm of rain each, and it rains on most days. Sun is rare, at barely over an hour a day. Humidity sits in the mid-80s, so clothes stay damp and the air feels thick.
The rain often comes as heavy downpours, and some streets flood. Plan indoor days: the House of Sampoerna museum in the old town, the Submarine Monument, or a long meal of rawon (a black beef soup) or rujak cingur (a salad with a peanut-shrimp paste sauce). Hotels are quieter and easier to find, though, and you'll see few other visitors. Hiking and volcano trips are a poor bet in these months.
Shoulder months: May and November
May is the better of the two. Rain drops to 125 mm and the sun returns a little, though the rating is still Poor. It's a fair pick if your dates are fixed and you don't mind a few showers.
November is the reverse. The heat is still high, but the rains are coming back, with rain on 22 days. It's the muggiest-feeling time to visit.
Crowds and events
Surabaya is a business and transit city, so it doesn't have a big tourist high season. Hotel rates and crowds follow Indonesian holidays more than weather. Expect busier trains, airports and roads around Eid al-Fitr (Lebaran), when many people travel home. Dates move each year, so check them before you book. Surabaya's anniversary celebrations in late May are also worth a look if you're in town then.
