February feels hot, sticky and very wet in Surabaya. The air stays humid, clouds often cover the sky, and rain can interrupt your plans on most days. Streets may flood or slow down after heavy showers, so outdoor sightseeing can take longer than expected.

You can still visit indoor sights such as the House of Sampoerna or shop at Tunjungan Plaza between downpours. Keep flexible plans for walks around the old town and avoid relying on a long outdoor day. The rain eases a little in March, while July and August are better for drier outings.

Holidays and crowds

Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February. If it does, you may see celebrations around Surabaya's Chinatown and Hong Tiek Hian temple, though dates change each year. Local streets and eateries can get busier around the holiday.

Outside holiday periods, February is generally quieter than Surabaya's drier high season in July and August. Hotels and flights may be less sought-after than in those months, but prices vary, and a holiday weekend can bring a short-lived rush.

If you hate crowds, visit Hong Tiek Hian on an ordinary weekday rather than during Chinese New Year.

Make rainy days work

Travelling with kids? Plan a museum visit or a long meal when the afternoon rain sets in. Surabaya's rawon, a dark beef soup, makes a satisfying stop at a local restaurant.

For a practical base, use Tunjungan Plaza as a sheltered break between city sights. If you're heading to the House of Sampoerna, check traffic before setting off: rain can make the trip across central Surabaya slower. Don't pack too many outdoor stops into one day; leave room to wait out a shower.
