October: hot and changeable

October still feels hot in Surabaya, with daytime highs around 34°C and warm nights. Rain falls on about 11 days, but showers don't usually take over the whole day. You can still visit Tugu Pahlawan, browse the old buildings around Jalan Tunjungan, or take a boat to Kenjeran Beach. Cloud and rain can interrupt beach plans, though, and a sticky afternoon is tiring for long outdoor walks.

If you're keen on walking, keep the route around Tunjungan short and duck into a café when the heat builds. The House of Sampoerna's indoor museum is a good choice when rain arrives.

October events

Hari Santri Nasional falls on October 22. It's a national day recognising Indonesia's Islamic boarding-school students and teachers, and you may see local events at schools and mosques. The scale varies, so don't count on a big public celebration in the city centre.

Surabaya is generally quieter in October than during the July and August holiday season, which is among the busiest times to visit. You may find less pressure on hotels and attractions, though prices still depend on your dates and local events. November brings more rain, so October can suit a city break if you're flexible.

Travelling with kids? Use the indoor galleries at House of Sampoerna during the hottest part of the day, then take a becak—a cycle rickshaw—around nearby old streets. For food, try rujak cingur, a local salad with beef snout and a rich fermented-shrimp sauce; ask for a milder sauce if you're unsure.
