Visit Kota Lama when the sun is lower, then stop for lumpia, Semarang's famous spring roll. The old town's open streets offer little shade, and the afternoon warmth can make a long walk tiring.

Travelling with kids? Pair a shorter Kota Lama visit with the air-conditioned shops at nearby Paragon City Mall. If rain catches you, the covered Semarang Poncol station area is handy for onward train travel. Check your route before setting out, as the historic centre and station are not side by side.
