Semarang Weather in December

December: hot and very wet

December feels sticky, with highs around 30°C and nights still warm. Rain falls on most days, and cloud cover leaves little sunshine. Expect sudden downpours and wet streets, so outdoor sightseeing can be stop-start. Kota Lama's old buildings are still worth a visit, but save time for cafés or the indoor exhibits at Lawang Sewu when rain sets in.

If you hate crowds, visit outside the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Make room for rain

The rain doesn't rule out a Semarang visit, but it does change the pace. Try a long lunch of lumpia, the city's fried spring rolls, or explore Sam Poo Kong's covered temple spaces between showers. Skip a tightly packed day of outdoor sights; heavy rain can make walking uncomfortable and slow trips across town.

A local tip: take a ride-hailing car between Kota Lama and Semarang Tawang station if the streets are flooded. It's a short route, but puddles can make the walk unpleasant.

Holidays and crowds

Christmas Day is a public holiday, and the year-end school break brings more Indonesian families on the move. Expect busier transport and higher fares around Christmas and New Year than in a quiet December week. Semarang is generally less in demand in this rainy month than during the drier July and August peak, so the holiday rush is concentrated around the break.

There's no need to plan your visit around a major December festival. If you're in town for Christmas, you'll find church services, while the wet weather makes flexible indoor stops more useful than a packed sightseeing schedule.
