Jakarta Weather in December

December: wet and sticky

December feels hot, damp and cloudy in Jakarta. Expect rain on most days, with little sunshine and high humidity. Showers can disrupt walks around Kota Tua or time at Monas, and heavy rain may cause local flooding and slow traffic. November is slightly hotter and less wet; January brings even more rain.

The weather suits indoor stops such as the National Museum, Jakarta Aquarium or a mall in Central Jakarta. Keep outdoor plans flexible, and don't count on a clear day for a long visit to the Thousand Islands. You'll still have plenty of daylight, but skies can stay grey.

Christmas and New Year

Christmas is a public holiday in Indonesia, and New Year's Eve brings celebrations around Bundaran HI. Some shops and restaurants may change their hours over the holidays. Jakarta can feel quieter in business districts when residents leave town, but travel to and from the city gets busy.

If you hate crowds, avoid Bundaran HI on New Year's Eve and expect traffic diversions nearby. Holiday travel can push up fares and make popular routes busier than in ordinary weeks. Jakarta's malls are a good rainy-day option, though they can fill up around Christmas.

Make rain part of the plan

Travelling with kids? Pair a rainy spell with Jakarta Aquarium at Neo Soho, then stay indoors for lunch. For a classic local meal, try nasi uduk, rice cooked in coconut milk, in a covered food spot around Kebon Kacang.

For a drier city break, August and September are better choices. In December, use the MRT to reach Bundaran HI rather than relying on a car through central traffic. Rain can slow road journeys sharply, especially when water collects on streets. Check local flood and transport updates before heading to Kota Tua or the old port at Sunda Kelapa.
