Visiting Jakarta in May
May weather
Jakarta stays hot in May, with highs around 30°C and warm nights. The air feels sticky, and rain falls on many days, often breaking up an afternoon outdoors. It's less rainy than April, but showers can still interrupt a day out.
The National Monument and Kota Tua work best when you can duck indoors between stops. Save long walks around Merdeka Square for a drier spell, and don't count on a full beach day at Ancol. With limited sunshine and frequent cloud, the weather can feel grey as well as humid.
If you hate crowds, May is a useful shoulder-season choice before the busier July and August holiday period.
Events and crowds
May Day on 1 May can bring labour rallies in central Jakarta. These may slow traffic near government buildings and major roads, so allow extra time if you're crossing the city. Vesak may also fall in May; the date changes each year, and some people visit Jakarta's temples to mark it.
Compared with the July–August peak, May is generally quieter and often better value for hotels. It's not empty, though: local weekends and public holidays can still fill popular spots such as Taman Mini Indonesia Indah.
Getting around
For a city break, mix indoor stops with short visits to places like the National Museum or Grand Indonesia. Avoid relying on a tight schedule of outdoor sights; a downpour can make Jakarta's traffic crawl.
Travelling with kids? Keep Kota Tua's museums as a rainy-day option, and use the MRT between Lebak Bulus and Bundaran HI when central roads are slow. It won't take you to Kota Tua, but it can make the southern-to-central part of your day easier. Check the May Day route before heading through central Jakarta.
