October: rain starts to build

October feels hot and sticky, with highs around 31°C and humidity at 77%. Rain falls on 21 days, and the sky is often cloudy, so outdoor plans can be interrupted. November is wetter still, while September is much drier.

You can still explore Kota Tua, but leave room to duck into the Jakarta History Museum or a nearby café when showers roll in. An air-conditioned stop at Grand Indonesia can be a welcome break from the humid streets. Skip long outdoor walks if the day looks stormy; wet pavements and traffic make getting around slower.

Batik and quieter streets

National Batik Day falls on October 2. Batik is Indonesia's traditional patterned cloth; shops and cultural venues may mark the day, though events vary from year to year.

If you hate crowds, October can suit you better than the drier months of August and September. Visitor numbers tend to be lower, and hotel demand may ease, but don't expect every deal to be guaranteed. Jakarta's traffic stays busy year-round, especially around office districts.

Make rainy-day plans

Travelling with kids? Keep an indoor stop in mind for sudden showers, rather than trying to fit a full day outside.

For Kota Tua, take the KRL commuter train to Jakarta Kota station; it's close to the old-town sights and avoids some road traffic. Check the weather before heading to open-air Fatahillah Square, then visit the museum if rain sets in. Try soto Betawi, a Jakarta beef soup, at a nearby food stall or restaurant to warm up after a wet walk.
