March: rain shapes the day

Jakarta stays hot in March, with highs around 29°C and nights near 26°C. But rain falls on almost every day, and the air feels sticky. Thick cloud often dulls the daylight, so don't expect much bright sunshine.

The rain eases a little from February, but March is still very wet. Showers can slow traffic and leave streets flooded. Keep outdoor plans flexible: visit the National Museum or Grand Indonesia when rain sets in, and save Kota Tua's old streets for a dry spell.

Plans and events

Java Jazz Festival is often held in March, though its dates change. It draws music fans to the JIExpo area in Kemayoran. Check that year's schedule before building your trip around it. There isn't a fixed major Jakarta festival every March.

Crowds and local tips

March is generally quieter than Jakarta's drier peak months of August and September. Hotels and flights may cost less than in those popular months, though prices depend on dates and events. You'll still find busy roads and packed commuter trains; fewer visitors don't make rush hour calm.

If you're heading to Kota Tua, use the Jakarta Kota station on the KRL commuter line rather than relying on a car through wet traffic. Check the route before setting out, and keep a museum or café nearby as a backup if rain interrupts your walk.
