Best Time to Visit South Tangerang

Two seasons, one clear winner

South Tangerang sits just south-west of Jakarta, and the year really has two moods. The wet season runs December to March. February is the wettest month, with 384 mm of rain. It rains on most days, and the sky stays grey. Afternoons feel heavy and sticky, and humidity sits close to 90%.

The dry season peaks in August. It's the only month we rate Good. Rain falls on about 10 days, you get around six hours of sun, and nights are the coolest of the year. July and September are Fair and still pleasant.

Which month for which trip

Want to spend time outdoors? Aim for July to September. That's the window for walking the paths around Situ Gintung, a lake in Ciputat, or cycling the lanes of the Bintaro Jaya area without getting soaked. Weekends at the lakes are lively but not hard to handle.

If you're mostly here for malls, food and meetings, the weather matters less. Places like Summarecon Mall Serpong, AEON Mall BSD City and the cafés of BSD City are all indoors and air-conditioned. Rain is a good excuse to eat your way through them. Try soto betawi (a creamy beef soup) or kerak telor (a spiced egg and rice snack) at a food court.

Travelling with kids? Dry months make it easier to visit outdoor spots like the Taman Kota parks in BSD. Try to avoid the afternoon downpours of November and April.

Crowds, holidays and events

South Tangerang isn't a beach or resort town, so there's no tourist high season in the usual sense. The busier times follow Indonesian holidays. Around Eid al-Fitr, many residents leave for their home towns. Roads empty out and some shops close for a few days. Eid moves each year, so check the date.

Indonesian Independence Day on 17 August falls in the best-weather month. Expect flag decorations, street games and neighbourhood contests called lomba, like sack races and pole climbing. It's a fun time to be around.

School holidays in late June and July bring more families to the malls and Jakarta-bound roads. Traffic is the real crowd problem here all year. The commuter line from Rawa Buntu and Sudimara stations toward Jakarta gets packed on weekday mornings and evenings.

If you want the easiest trip, come in August. Pick a weekday, and you'll get the best skies and the quietest roads.
