The coast is lovely for a walk, but December isn't a reliable month for swimming or a beach-focused trip. After heavy rain, skip plans that depend on dry trails.

The Feast of Saint Spyridon on December 12 is a meaningful local event. The saint's relics are carried in procession through Corfu Town, drawing residents and visitors to the streets. If you're there, expect a more solemn occasion than a big street party.

Christmas and New Year bring church services and seasonal decorations, especially around town. Some tavernas and hotels outside Corfu Town close for winter, so your choice of places to eat may be smaller. Look for sofrito, a local dish of veal cooked with garlic and white wine, on menus that stay open.

A quieter island

If you hate crowds, December is a calm time to explore Corfu Town without summer's busy streets. Prices and visitor numbers are generally lower than in the peak months, though fewer open businesses can limit your options. April to June is a better bet for warmer sightseeing weather.

Travelling with kids? Keep the day flexible when rain rolls in. A practical plan is to base yourself near the Old Town, where you can shelter under the Liston's arches and reach the Saint Spyridon Church on foot. Don't count on every coastal bus or seasonal service running as it does in summer.
