Visiting Corfu in January
Weather and days out
January feels cool, damp and often grey in Corfu. The high is 13°C, with rain on 15 days and only 3.2 hours of sun a day on average. December is wetter, while February is a little milder and drier.
You can still enjoy Corfu Town's narrow lanes, the Liston arcade and the Old Fortress between showers. Stop for a long lunch of pastitsada, a local beef-and-pasta dish, when the weather turns. Beach days are a gamble, and muddy paths can make countryside walks less pleasant. Save long hikes and swimming for a drier visit.
January events
New Year's Day is a public holiday, and Epiphany on January 6 is a major Greek Orthodox celebration. In Corfu Town, the blessing of the waters is held at the Old Port, where a cross is thrown into the sea and swimmers retrieve it. It's a local tradition, not a warm-weather beach event.
Travelling with kids? The ceremony is a memorable outing, but keep expectations flexible if rain affects the day.
Crowds and practical tips
January is among Corfu's quietest months. You'll find fewer visitors than in the summer, and accommodation prices are generally lower. The trade-off is that some seasonal hotels, restaurants and tour services close, especially outside Corfu Town.
For a useful rainy-day stop, head to the Liston's covered arcades for coffee and shelter near Spianada Square. Keep your plans close to town, where you're less reliant on seasonal transport and open businesses. The island is a better fit for a quiet city break than a full beach holiday now.
