December weather

December feels cool, damp and often cloudy in Thessaloniki. Days reach about 12°C, while evenings can fall to 4°C. Rain comes on several days, and the short daylight leaves less time outdoors. It's milder than January, but wetter; November is warmer and a little drier.

You can still enjoy the waterfront walk from the White Tower to Aristotelous Square, then duck into the Archaeological Museum or warm up over bougatsa, a flaky pastry often filled with custard. Rain can make the steep lanes of Ano Poli slippery, so save that uphill wander for a dry spell.

Christmas in the city

Christmas brings lights and seasonal events to the centre, with Aristotelous Square a natural place to see the decorations. Greek families gather for Christmas and New Year, and churches hold services; expect more local activity around the holidays than on an ordinary winter evening.

Families who enjoy festive city breaks may find December more appealing than a beach-focused trip. You won't get reliable beach weather, and long outdoor days are harder to plan. Instead, mix short walks with museums, cafés and meals in Ladadika, the old warehouse district.

Crowds and costs

December is generally quieter than the popular spring and autumn months, so the city's main sights can feel less pressed. The holiday period draws more visitors, though, and central streets get busier around Christmas and New Year. Prices are often gentler than during busier travel seasons, but don't assume every hotel keeps low rates over the holidays.

For an easy winter outing, take a city bus up to Ano Poli rather than tackling its steep streets on foot in wet weather. Check the route before you go, then wander down past the old walls when conditions are dry.
