Visiting Tirana in December
December weather
Tirana feels cool, damp and often grey in December, so you won't get the sunny, mild days the city is known for. Afternoons reach about 10°C, while nights can drop to 3°C. Rain falls on 12 days, which can leave the pavements around Skanderbeg Square slick and make outdoor plans harder to keep.
Still, there's plenty to do in the city centre. You can duck into Bunk'Art 2 or linger over lunch at Pazari i Ri, the New Bazaar. Daylight is short, so long day trips feel less appealing. If you're hoping for sunny café terraces or a dry hike up Dajti, December will likely disappoint. November is wetter, but December is noticeably colder, so it's a trade-off rather than a clear win for either month.
Christmas and New Year
Christmas brings decorations and a festive feel to central Tirana, especially around Skanderbeg Square. New Year's Eve is the bigger public celebration, with crowds gathering in the square for the countdown, so the centre is livelier then than on an ordinary winter evening.
If crowds aren't your thing, visit the square earlier in the day and leave the New Year's gathering to others. Keep in mind that Christmas Day is a public holiday, so some shops and services may close or keep shorter hours.
Crowds and costs
December sits in winter low season, well outside the popular May-to-June and September travel periods. You'll generally find fewer visitors and better value on accommodation than in those busier months. New Year's Eve is the main exception: the centre fills up, and places to stay can be less of a bargain around the holiday.
If the weather turns on you, head to Bunk'Art 2 near Skanderbeg Square, then warm up with tavë kosi, Albania's baked lamb-and-yoghurt dish, at Pazari i Ri. The market's food spots make a handy stop on a rainy afternoon.
