December feels damp

December in Dubrovnik is mild by winter standards, but it can feel chilly and wet. Expect rain on many days, cloudy skies and limited sunshine. The sea-facing Old Town's stone streets can get slippery, so take care around the steps and lanes.

When it's dry, stroll Stradun or visit the city walls for views over the rooftops. Rainy spells suit indoor stops such as the Rector's Palace or the Franciscan Monastery. Long beach days and exposed walks are less appealing in this weather.

Advent on Stradun

Dubrovnik's Winter Festival brings Advent stalls, decorations and seasonal events to the Old Town. Stradun is the heart of the celebrations, and New Year's Eve often draws a crowd for its outdoor concert. Check the festival programme closer to your visit, as events can vary.

Quieter, with a festive bump

December is much quieter than Dubrovnik's busy June-to-August season. You'll usually find fewer visitors in the Old Town, and accommodation tends to cost less than in summer. The festive period, especially New Year's Eve, is an exception, so expect more people around Stradun.

A useful local stop on a rainy day is the Franciscan Monastery, just off Stradun. Its old pharmacy is still part of the complex, and it gives you a sheltered break from the damp lanes. Check opening times before setting out.
