Visiting Dubrovnik in January
January weather
January feels cool, damp and often cloudy in Dubrovnik. Daytime highs reach 11°C, while nights stay around 8°C. Rain falls on 13 days, and you'll get only a few hours of sun on an average day. The sea and stone streets can feel chilly, especially when the wind picks up.
You can still enjoy the Old Town's lanes, Rector's Palace and cosy cafés between showers. A wet day suits museums better than long walks on the City Walls. Skip plans that depend on clear views from Mount Srđ; clouds can hide the coast, and rain makes steep paths less appealing.
Events and quiet streets
The Dubrovnik Winter Festival usually continues into early January, with holiday stalls and events around the Old Town. Epiphany, on January 6, is a public holiday in Croatia, so some shops and services may close.
If you hate crowds, January is one of the quietest times to explore Stradun and the Old Town. Prices for stays are generally lower than in summer, but some seasonal hotels, restaurants and tours close or run reduced hours. You'll have more space, but fewer choices than during the busy June-to-August season.
Make the most of a rainy day
Try zelena menestra, a traditional Dubrovnik stew with cabbage and smoked meat, at a restaurant serving local food. It's a warming choice after a damp walk through the Old Town.
Travelling with kids? Keep the Rector's Palace or Maritime Museum in reserve for rainy spells, rather than relying on a long outdoor day. For clear weather, take the cable car up Mount Srđ for views over the rooftops and Adriatic. Check that it's running before you set out, as poor weather can affect the ride.
