Mild days, changeable skies

December in Larnaca feels mild rather than wintry, with daytime highs around 18°C and nights near 14°C. The sea breeze and passing showers can make the seafront feel cooler, and rain falls on about ten days. You'll still get sunny spells, but don't count on every beach day being dry.

It's a good month for walking the palm-lined Finikoudes promenade, visiting St Lazarus Church, or exploring the old Turkish Quarter between showers. Swimming and sunbathing are less reliable than in warmer months; save your beach plans for a bright, calm day. The Salt Lake may attract flamingos in winter, though sightings aren't guaranteed.

Christmas in the city

Christmas Day is a public holiday, and Larnaca's streets and shopfronts take on festive decorations. Some businesses may close or shorten their hours, so keep sightseeing flexible. New Year's Eve brings local celebrations, but don't expect the scale of a major European party city.

If you hate crowds, December is a quieter choice than summer and the popular spring and autumn months. Prices and visitor numbers are generally lower, though they can rise around Christmas and New Year.

Make room for rain

Travelling with kids? St Lazarus Church and the nearby lanes offer an easy cultural outing when the weather turns wet. Rain can interrupt long walks, so keep a café stop around Ermou Street in mind.

For a local winter treat, try pourekia, sweet pastries often filled with fresh cheese and flavoured with cinnamon. Pick one up near the old town after visiting the church. The weather shifts more than it does in November, which is warmer and drier, so a sunny forecast is worth using for a longer stroll along Mackenzie Beach.
