Best Time to Visit Albania

Tirana is the only city we cover

Our site lists one Albanian destination for now: Tirana, the capital. Its best months are May, June and September. August is the hottest month, at 33°C. November is the wettest, with 119 mm of rain.

Albania has more variety than one city shows. The coast, around Sarandë, Vlorë and Durrës, has a Mediterranean feel. The mountains in the north, like Theth and Valbona, are cooler and get snow. We don't have data for those places, so treat this as general guidance.

Spring and early autumn are the sweet spot

May and June are warm without being punishing. You can walk around Tirana's Blloku neighbourhood, climb Dajti Ekspres cable car's mountain for the view, and sit outside at a café on Skanderbeg Square. Trails in the Albanian Alps are usually best from late June, once the high snow has melted.

September is the other good window. The sea is still warm from the summer, and the crowds have thinned. If you want beaches without a packed sunbed, this is your month.

Summer is busy and hot

July and August are high season, especially on the coast. Many Albanians living abroad come home in August, so beaches, ferries and roads fill up. Tirana itself gets very hot in August. Afternoons are slow and sticky, so most people hide indoors until the evening, then head out for the *xhiro*, the traditional evening stroll.

Travelling with kids? Summer school holidays make the coast the most crowded, so expect to share the sand.

Winter is quiet and wet

From November to February, it's low season. Rain is heavy in November, and Tirana feels grey and damp. Some beach hotels and seaside restaurants close. On the plus side, museums and cafés are calm, and the mountains turn snowy and still.

Independence Day on 28 November and Liberation Day on 29 November are national holidays. Expect shops and offices to close, and some local travel to be busier than usual.
