May weather

May feels warm and spring-like in Tirana, with comfortable afternoons and cooler evenings. Rain is still part of the month, so a shower can interrupt a walk, but it usually won't define your whole day. The long daylight gives you time to explore Skanderbeg Square, the National History Museum and the cafés around Blloku.

It's a good month for walking up to the Grand Park and around its lake, or taking the cable car up Mount Dajti for views over the city. Save a full day at the beach for later in the year; Tirana itself is inland, and May weather can be changeable.

May events

May Day, on 1 May, is a public holiday in Albania. Some shops or services may close, though central Tirana's main sights and cafés can still make a pleasant day out. Martyrs' Day, on 5 May, is a national day of remembrance, often marked with ceremonies.

If you hate crowds, May is a comfortable time to visit: the city feels less busy than in the peak summer holiday months. It's also one of Tirana's best months for weather, so popular spots can still draw plenty of visitors. Prices may be more moderate than in high summer, but they vary by hotel and event.

Make the most of it

Travelling with kids? The Grand Park's paths and lake make an easy break from sightseeing, and there are cafés nearby for a pause.

For a practical rainy-day plan, head to Bunk'Art 2 near Skanderbeg Square. This underground museum explores Albania's communist-era history, and it keeps you out of the showers. Afterward, try tavë kosi, a baked dish of lamb and yoghurt, at a traditional restaurant in the centre.
