June: warm, long days

June feels summery in Ürümqi, with warm afternoons and cooler evenings. The high reaches 30°C, but low humidity makes the heat less sticky. Rain falls on a handful of days, so most visits suit outdoor plans.

You'll have long daylight for the Xinjiang Regional Museum or a walk around Hongshan Park. Save strenuous sightseeing for cooler parts of the day, and don't count on every afternoon being clear: cloud cover is common. The mountain scenery around Heavenly Lake is lovely, but check local conditions before making the trip.

Events and crowds

The Dragon Boat Festival sometimes falls in June. It's a public holiday, but its date changes each year, so local travel can pick up if it coincides with your visit. Ürümqi's summer season is getting underway; expect more visitors and firmer hotel prices than in May, though July and August are usually busier.

If you hate crowds, May or September is a better bet. Those months are among the best overall for a visit, and June can feel like a step up in both heat and demand.

Make the most of your visit

Travelling with kids? Keep a museum visit in reserve for a cloudy or rainy spell, then enjoy the long evening light around Hongshan Park.

For a local food stop, head to the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar and try lamb kebabs or hand-pulled noodles. Go in the evening, when browsing the stalls feels more comfortable than in the midday heat. If you're visiting Heavenly Lake, ask about the day's transport arrangements before setting out; it's outside the city, not a quick walk from central Ürümqi.
