September feels comfortable

September is one of the best months to visit Ürümqi. Days reach 25°C, but evenings cool to around 12°C. It's much less hot than August, and rain is limited to a few days. You'll get plenty of sun for exploring the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar or walking around Hongshan Park.

The dry air makes city sightseeing more comfortable than in midsummer. You can also take a day trip to Heavenly Lake, though it feels cooler up in the mountains. Don't count on warm evenings for long outdoor plans; temperatures drop after sunset.

Events and crowds

There's no single major festival held in Ürümqi every September. The Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in September, but its date changes each year. If it does, you may see mooncakes in shops and family celebrations around the city.

If you hate crowds, September is a good choice after the busy summer travel season. It's also before China's National Day holiday in October, when domestic travel can surge. Prices often ease after summer, though they can rise near the holiday if you travel in late September.

Travelling with kids? September's milder afternoons make a stroll through Hongshan Park easier than during August's heat.

For Heavenly Lake, take a warm layer for the higher, breezier setting, even if Ürümqi feels pleasant. The lake is a popular day trip, so allow time for the journey and the walk between viewpoints. Back in the city, try a plate of laghman—hand-pulled noodles often served with meat and vegetables—at a Uyghur restaurant near the Grand Bazaar. The evenings are cool enough to enjoy a hot meal outdoors.
