January: deep winter

January is properly cold in Urumqi. Days reach about -2°C, while nights fall to around -11°C. There's little rain, but the short days and limited sunshine can make afternoons feel grey and chilly. It's winter, not a month for lingering outdoors.

You can still visit the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar, where indoor shops offer a warmer break between sights. A steaming bowl of dapanji, a local chicken-and-potato stew, is welcome after time outside. Save long walks and outdoor plans for the brightest part of the day, and don't count on a comfortable visit to open parks.

Holidays, crowds and costs

January is usually quieter than the popular spring and autumn months. You'll likely find fewer visitors at major sights, and accommodation can be less costly than during busier travel periods. Chinese New Year sometimes falls in January, though its date changes each year. If it does, local travel can pick up around the holiday, and some businesses may close or change their hours.

If you hate crowds, January can suit you—unless your visit overlaps with the holiday rush.

Make the cold work

Keep your plans flexible. If the cold cuts an outdoor visit short, spend more time at the Grand Bazaar or settle in for a long meal. For a classic local dish, try dapanji with wide belt noodles; it's hearty enough to make a cold evening feel easier.

At the Grand Bazaar, check whether the parts you want to visit are open before setting out. The complex has indoor and outdoor areas, so you can focus on shops and food rather than spending a long time outside. Don't choose January for a warm-weather city break; April and May or September are better bets.
