May is one of the easiest months to explore Ürümqi. Afternoons are mild, evenings are cooler, and rain falls on only a handful of days. The average high is 25°C, with 5.9 hours of sun a day. Showers can interrupt a walk, but they're unlikely to dominate your visit.

It's a good time for the Xinjiang Regional Museum and outdoor stops such as Red Hill Park. You can also take a day trip to Heavenly Lake, though mountain conditions can feel cooler than in the city. Save long, exposed walks for a dry day, and don't expect June's warmer afternoons yet.

Crowds and holidays

China's May Day holiday brings a rush of domestic travellers. The busiest stretch is around the holiday, when trains and popular sights can feel crowded. Hotel prices may rise then, too. Outside that period, May is generally calmer and better value than the summer peak, though it's busier than winter.

For Heavenly Lake, use the shuttle from the scenic-area entrance rather than expecting to drive right to the shore. That keeps the trip straightforward, especially if the mountain road feels slow.
