Almaty Weather in May

May weather

May feels warm and springlike in Almaty, with mild evenings and plenty of daylight. It's a good time to stroll around Panfilov Park, visit the Green Bazaar, or take the cable car up to Kok Tobe. Rain falls on several days, though, so a wet afternoon can interrupt outdoor plans.

The nearby mountains are tempting, but rain can leave trails muddy. Save longer hikes for a clearer day, and don't count on June's drier weather yet.

Holidays and crowds

May brings several national holidays, including Unity Day on May 1 and Victory Day on May 9. You may find celebrations and some closures around these dates, while central parks and public spaces can feel busier.

If you hate crowds, visit the Green Bazaar on a quieter weekday rather than around a holiday. May is a popular spring month, but it's generally less busy than summer; prices can also be gentler than in peak summer, though holiday dates may be an exception.

Make the most of May

For a mountain view without committing to a long hike, head to Medeu and continue by cable car toward Shymbulak. Check conditions locally before setting off, as rain in the city can mean poor visibility higher up.

Travelling with kids? Panfilov Park's wide paths and the nearby Ascension Cathedral make an easy outing between showers. A bowl of lagman, a noodle soup served across Central Asia, is a cosy choice after a damp day around town.
