April weather in Almaty

April brings proper spring weather, but it can change through the day. Afternoons can feel mild, while evenings turn cool. Rain falls on several days, and cloudy spells are common. You'll get more daylight than in March, which helps with long walks around Panfilov Park and the Green Bazaar.

It's a good month for city sights and cafés, but wet paths can make mountain trails slippery. Higher up, snow may still affect hikes, so don't assume a clear view from the trails above Medeu. The cable car to Shymbulak is a better way to enjoy the mountains without committing to a long walk.

Events and crowds

The Almaty Marathon is usually held in April. It brings runners and spectators into the city, with road closures along parts of the route. Check the event date before choosing a hotel near the centre.

April is also a quieter shoulder-season month than summer. You'll generally find fewer visitors than in the peak holiday months, and accommodation can cost less. Spring break dates can still bring families to popular sights.
