Best Time to Visit Almaty

Four seasons, and they're all real

Almaty sits at the foot of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, and you feel the seasons clearly. Winter runs from December to February. Days hover just above freezing, nights are properly cold, and the sun barely shows. It's grey, but it's also ski time. Shymbulak, the resort above the city, is reached by a long gondola ride from Medeu.

Spring comes fast. March is changeable, and April and May are the wettest months, with showers on about ten days each. The rain is usually short, though, and the apple trees and tulips in the parks make up for it. Almaty's name is often linked to apples, so it feels fitting.

Which month for which trip

For a mix of city and mountains, pick September or October. September is warm, dry and sunny, with just four rainy days. Markets like the Green Bazaar are full of fruit, and you can walk up Kok Tobe hill without melting. Early October is cooler and calmer, and the leaves turn on the slopes around Big Almaty Lake.

May and June suit hikers. Valleys are green, and the days are long and warm without the heat of midsummer. Try the trails near Medeu or a day trip to Charyn Canyon. June is the sunniest of the "Excellent" months.

July and August are hot and dry. July is the hottest month, and you'll want shade in the afternoon. It's better to spend those days up high, in the mountains or by Kolsai Lakes, than wandering downtown.

Is skiing your plan? Aim for January or February, and accept the short, dim days.

Crowds and events

Summer is the busiest time, when locals and visitors head for the mountains and lakes. Mountain trails and Big Almaty Lake feel busiest on weekends. Spring and autumn are quieter, and winter is calmest outside ski weekends.

Nauryz, the spring new year, falls around 21 March. Expect folk music, yurts set up in public spaces and big pots of the festive dish nauryz kozhe. It's a good reason to visit even though March itself is still chilly and rated Good rather than Excellent.

Victory Day on 9 May brings parades and crowds near Panfilov Park. Late autumn is the real low season. November is damp and grey, with the mountains often hidden, so it's best for cheap city breaks and museum days rather than views.
