December weather

Almaty feels properly wintry in December. Afternoons can reach 5°C, but nights drop below freezing, and the short days leave little time outdoors. Expect plenty of cloud and only about two hours of sun a day. Rain falls on several days, so city streets can feel damp and cold.

The weather is poor for long mountain hikes or leisurely outdoor sightseeing. Keep those plans for warmer months, such as April or September. You can still visit Panfilov Park and the colourful Zenkov Cathedral, then warm up in a café or explore the Central State Museum. Medeu's famous skating rink is a classic winter outing, though conditions can vary.

Holidays and winter days

Kazakhstan's Independence Day falls on December 16, and Almaty marks it with public events. New Year is also a major celebration, with seasonal decorations and festivities around the city. Exact programmes can change, so don't count on a particular event without checking locally.

If you hate crowds, avoid the busiest New Year period around Republic Square. For a quieter city break, December is generally less crowded than the popular spring and autumn months. It's also winter low season, though holiday demand can lift prices around New Year.

Getting around
