New Year is the main December celebration in Bishkek. Ala-Too Square usually gets festive decorations and a large tree, and people gather there around the holiday. The exact programme can change, so the square is worth a look even if you're not going to an event.

If you hate crowds, visit the square earlier in the day and enjoy the lights later from a quieter street nearby. Travelling with kids? The decorations make a simple evening outing, but the cold can cut it short.

December is winter low season, so Bishkek is generally quieter than during the popular spring and autumn months. You'll usually find fewer visitors at city sights, and accommodation can cost less than in those busier periods. New Year can bring a local rush around the main celebrations, though.

For an easy indoor stop, take the city's trolleybus to the Osh Bazaar area. Browse the covered market for dried fruit, nuts and kurut, a salty dried yoghurt snack. The route gives you a feel for everyday Bishkek, and the market is a better bet than a long outdoor excursion on a cloudy day.
