Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
April, May, September and October all score Excellent, and they suit different trips. April is fresh and green, with 21°C afternoons that are good for wandering Ala-Too Square and Osh Bazaar (the big covered market, where you can graze on samsa pastries). It's also one of the wetter months, so expect some showers.
May is warmer at 26°C, with the city's tree-lined parks at their best. September is even better if you want dry, sunny days. It's still 28°C, with only 15 mm of rain. October cools to 20°C and turns golden, which suits a day in Ala Archa National Park, about an hour south of the city. Nights get chilly, so the higher trails feel properly autumnal.
Summer: hot in town, cool in the hills
July is the hottest month at 35°C, and the sun is strong. It's also dry, so the heat is easier than a sticky place would be. August is close behind at 33°C and has the least rain, with just 2 wet days. June sits between spring and peak summer.
Use Bishkek as a base and head up. Issyk-Kul lake, a few hours east, is the main summer draw, and its beach towns fill with Central Asian holidaymakers from July into August. Trekking in the Tian Shan mountains is best in these months too. In the city, do your walking in the evening and spend the afternoon in a shady spot like Oak Park.
The Nowruz spring festival falls on 21 March, with concerts and food, though March itself is still cool and damp. Summer brings horse games and eagle-hunting displays, often staged for visitors around Issyk-Kul. Ask locally what's running while you're there.
Winter: quiet and grey
From December to February, highs stay between 6°C and 9°C, and nights dip below freezing. Skies are often overcast, with only about two hours of sun a day. The city feels quiet, and the mountain air can trap a haze of smog. Still, you'll have museums and cafés largely to yourself.
If you ski, Ala-Archa and the resorts near Karakol are the draw. They're a trip away from the city, but they're the best reason to come in January or February. November is a mild, calm in-between month. It's Good, with fewer visitors and no snow to worry about in town.
The high season runs roughly June to September. Spring and early autumn are the best mix of easy weather and thin crowds.
