Almaty feels properly wintry in February. Days can reach 6°C, but nights dip below freezing, and cloud often dulls the light. Rain falls on about seven days; around town, that can mean wet pavements or slushy snow. With little sunshine, sightseeing can feel chilly even when the afternoon seems mild.

You can still explore the Green Bazaar, museums and cafés around Panfilov Park, but long outdoor strolls may lose their charm. For mountain scenery, take the cable car from Medeu towards Shymbulak, where snow sports suit the season. Skip high-altitude hikes unless you have winter experience and proper gear.

Events and crowds

February has no major national holiday in Kazakhstan. Valentine's Day is marked in some shops and restaurants, but it isn't a big citywide event. For a local winter outing, skating at Medeu is a better bet than expecting a packed festival calendar.

If you hate crowds, February is quieter in central Almaty than the popular spring and autumn months. The ski slopes at Shymbulak can still draw weekend visitors, though, so the mountain feels busier than the city. City stays are often less in demand than during peak sightseeing seasons; ski-area costs may not follow the same pattern.

Making the most of it

February is a good fit if you're happy to mix indoor stops with short outdoor visits. Try baursak, fried dough often served with tea, at the Green Bazaar, then warm up in a nearby café. Travelling with kids? Medeu's skating rink gives them a winter activity without needing a mountain hike.

For Shymbulak, ride the cable car from Medeu rather than treating the steep road as a casual walk. The route climbs into colder mountain air, so check conditions locally before setting off. Back in town, keep Panfilov Park visits brief if the pavements are icy.
