July heat in the city

Almaty gets properly hot in July, with highs around 34°C and warm nights near 19°C. It's drier than June, though brief rain can still interrupt a day. The long daylight gives you time for a slow evening walk around Panfilov Park or dinner near the Green Bazaar.

Sightseeing is more comfortable in the morning or later in the day. Save the hottest hours for a shaded café or a museum, rather than a long walk along busy streets. July's dry air helps, but the afternoon sun can still feel fierce.

Cool off in the mountains

For a break from the heat, head to Medeu and take the gondola up to Shymbulak. The mountain air is cooler, and you can swap city pavements for trails and wide views. Check conditions locally before setting out, as summer showers can make paths slippery.

If you hate crowds, avoid weekends at Medeu and Shymbulak; locals head there to escape the city heat.

Holidays and summer crowds

July is high season, so popular sights and mountain spots are busier than in spring or autumn. Hotels and flights can also cost more than during Almaty's quieter shoulder months. July 6 is Capital City Day, a public holiday in Kazakhstan; it marks Astana, but celebrations may also be held in Almaty.

A useful local trick: take the city's bus 12 to Medeu, then continue uphill by gondola. It saves you from finding parking on a busy summer weekend. If you're visiting the Green Bazaar, go earlier in the day, before the heat builds and the aisles fill.
