June: warm and rainy

Kunming feels warm in June, but frequent rain and thick cloud can make the day feel damp and grey. The high reaches 28°C, and rain falls on 19 days. You'll still get long evenings, though there's little bright sunshine on average.

Plan outdoor time around dry spells. Green Lake is pleasant for a stroll, and Kunming's museums make a good fallback when showers settle in. The Stone Forest is still possible, but wet paths can make wandering among the rocks less comfortable. Don't count on clear views from higher ground.

If you hate crowds, June is a quieter choice than Kunming's best months from February to May.

Dragon Boat Festival

Keep Kunming's Yunnan Provincial Museum in mind for a wet afternoon, then head to a nearby restaurant for crossing-the-bridge rice noodles, a local speciality. It's a cosy way to spend an unsettled day without giving up on exploring the city.

If you're taking the trip out to the Stone Forest, check the forecast before leaving Kunming. A dry spell makes the rocky paths easier to enjoy, while heavy rain can leave them slippery. June can still be a rewarding time to visit; just let the weather set the pace.
