Kunming Weather in January

January: sunny winter days

Kunming's winter is cool rather than bitter, with afternoons reaching 16°C and nights dropping to 3°C. You'll get plenty of sun, and rain is limited to a few days, so January works well for walking around Green Lake Park or exploring the Yuantong Temple area.

Mornings and evenings feel chilly, especially at Kunming's high elevation. Save outdoor plans for the warmer part of the day, and don't expect a beach-style break. The Stone Forest makes a good day trip in the clear, dry weather, though its open paths can feel cold early on.

Holidays and crowds

Chinese New Year can fall in January, but its date changes each year. If it does, expect more domestic travellers and busy transport around the holiday. Shops and restaurants may also close or change their hours.

Outside that holiday period, January is quieter than Kunming's popular February-to-May season. You're likely to find fewer visitors at major sights, and prices are generally less pressured than during spring's peak. If you hate crowds, choose dates away from the New Year travel rush.

Make the most of the day

January is a good time for city sights and walks, but less suited to long, chilly evenings outdoors. Try crossing Green Lake's bridges in the afternoon, when the sun makes a stroll more pleasant. Then warm up with a bowl of crossing-the-bridge rice noodles, Kunming's well-known soup dish.

A local tip: Yuantong Temple sits below street level, so its sheltered courtyards offer a calmer stop if a cool breeze picks up. You can combine it with a walk through nearby Green Lake rather than making a separate trip.
