July: warm, wet days

Keep flexible indoor stops for rainy spells. The Yunnan Provincial Museum works well when the skies open, while a clear break suits a stroll around Green Lake Park. Avoid counting on long, dry hikes or far-reaching views from the Western Hills; wet paths can be slippery, and cloud may hide Dianchi Lake.

If you hate crowds, July isn't the quietest time to visit.

Festivals and holiday crowds

Make rain work for you

Rain doesn't usually mean a washout all day, but it can interrupt outdoor plans. Give yourself room to swap a park visit for a museum, then head outside when the clouds lift. The city's mild evenings can still make a relaxed walk around Green Lake enjoyable.

Travelling with kids? Keep the Stone Forest for a clearer day. Its rocky paths can be awkward when wet, and cloud takes away some of the scenery. For a local meal back in town, try crossing-the-bridge rice noodles, a well-known Yunnan dish served with hot broth.
