May feels warm and springlike, with afternoons reaching 27°C and cooler evenings near 14°C. You'll get plenty of daylight, but clouds and passing showers are part of the month. Rain falls on 11 days, so a dry morning can still turn wet later.

It's a good month for walking around Green Lake Park or taking the cable car up the Western Hills. Views can be cloudy after rain, though, and muddy paths make longer hikes less appealing. Compared with April, May is wetter; June brings much heavier rain. Save a full day outdoors for a clearer forecast.

Holidays and crowds

China's Labour Day holiday falls at the start of May. Kunming's railway stations and popular sights can get busy as people travel around the country. If you hate crowds, avoid the holiday period for a calmer visit to the Stone Forest or Dianchi Lake.

Outside the holiday, May is still a popular time to visit. It's one of Kunming's better months, so don't expect the quietest or cheapest stay of the year. The holiday can push up demand for rooms and trains, while ordinary weekdays tend to feel easier.

Making the most of May

Travelling with kids? Green Lake Park is an easy place to slow down between showers, with paths and open space near the city centre. For a meal, try crossing-the-bridge rice noodles, a Yunnan dish served with broth and separate ingredients.

A useful local tip: take the Western Hills cable car if clouds roll in over Dianchi Lake. You can still enjoy the ride and forest paths without committing to a long climb, then head back towards the city if rain sets in. Check the lake view from the hill before setting out; May's cloud cover can hide it.
