Visiting Kunming in August
August: wet summer days
Kunming stays mild by summer standards, but August feels damp and cloudy. Rain falls on many days, often interrupting plans rather than washing out a whole day. July is wetter; September brings less rain. You'll get limited sunshine, so don't expect long, bright afternoons.
The weather suits a visit to Yunnan Nationalities Village or Kunming's indoor museums. The Western Hills are still worth seeing, but rain can make trails muddy and views across Dianchi Lake hazy. Keep a flexible day for the Stone Forest, where wet limestone paths can be slippery.
Festivals and summer crowds
In some years, the Yi Torch Festival falls in August. It follows the lunar calendar, so dates vary; celebrations in the Stone Forest area can include music, dancing and torch processions. Ask locally about events before making a special trip.
If you hate crowds, August may not be your month. China's school summer holidays bring more domestic visitors to popular sights, and flights and hotels can cost more than in Kunming's quieter months, such as February to May or November. The city is still a useful base, but expect busy transport to the Stone Forest.
Make rain work for you
Travelling with kids? Keep a rainy-day option near the city centre, such as Yunnan Provincial Museum, instead of spending the day on exposed trails.
For the Stone Forest, take the early bus from Kunming's East Bus Station and go when the paths are drier. If a shower rolls in, pause at a covered viewing spot rather than rushing over slick rock. Back in town, try crossing the Green Lake area between showers; its teahouses make a welcome stop when the sky turns grey.
