Guiyang is warm, damp and often cloudy in August. Days reach about 28°C, while evenings stay mild near 20°C. Rain falls on 17 days, and the humidity can make a walk through the city feel sticky. Showers can interrupt outdoor plans, so keep your day flexible.

You can still explore Jiaxiu Pavilion or wander around Qingyan Ancient Town between showers. For a wet afternoon, head to the Guizhou Provincial Museum. Long hikes are less appealing when trails are slick, and you may get less sunshine than you'd hope for.

Events and crowds

August is part of the summer school holiday, so family attractions and popular spots can feel busier than in March or November, Guiyang's better months overall. Summer demand can also push up hotel prices compared with quieter months. Rain doesn't clear the crowds, though it may slow sightseeing.

Guizhou's Yi communities hold Torch Festival celebrations around the sixth lunar month, which can fall in July or August. These aren't a fixed event in central Guiyang, so don't assume you'll find a festival in the city. Qixi, China's Valentine's Day, also sometimes falls in August; its date shifts with the lunar calendar.

Making the most of it

If you hate crowds, save Qingyan Ancient Town for a rainy weekday if you can. Its stone lanes can be slippery, but you'll spend less time jostling through the busiest areas.

Travelling with kids? Keep an indoor stop in reserve for sudden showers. At Jiaxiu Pavilion, check the Nanming River's conditions before lingering by the water after heavy rain. For a local meal, try sour fish soup, a Guizhou favourite that makes a cosy stop when the weather turns grey.
