Guiyang Weather in May

May: mild, damp days

May feels warm rather than hot, but frequent rain and heavy cloud can make the day feel grey and sticky. You'll get long daylight hours, though sunshine is limited. Pack your sightseeing around showers: Jiaxiu Pavilion and the streets near the Nanming River make a good city outing, while Qianling Park is best enjoyed when its paths aren't slick.

Rain can disrupt longer walks and muddy trails, so don't make a hike the only plan. Keep indoor stops in mind, such as the Guizhou Provincial Museum. If you hate crowds, late May is calmer than the May Day holiday.

May Day and crowds

The May Day public holiday brings a rush of domestic visitors, especially around popular sights and transport hubs. Expect more people and higher hotel prices during the holiday than in quieter parts of May. Outside that peak, May is generally less busy than major holiday periods, though it isn't as reliably pleasant as Guiyang's best-weather months, March and November.

Travelling with kids? A rainy afternoon at the museum is easier than trying to keep everyone moving along wet paths at Qianling Park.

Make room for rain

May is wetter than April, and June is wetter still, so showers are part of the visit rather than a rare interruption. A relaxed city break works better than a tightly packed schedule. Try Guiyang's sour soup fish, a local Guizhou dish, when rain sends you looking for a cosy meal.

For a practical rainy-day stop, visit Jiaxiu Pavilion, then explore nearby streets when the rain eases. Keep your route flexible; the hills and winding roads around Guiyang can make a short journey feel slower in wet weather.
