Visiting Guiyang in January
January feels damp and cool
Guiyang's January days are cool, and evenings can drop close to freezing. The sky is often grey and the air feels damp, so even a dry spell can feel chilly. Rain comes on some days, but it's rarely a washout all month.
You can still explore Jiaxiu Pavilion or wander Qianling Park when the paths are dry. Save longer outdoor outings for clearer spells, and don't count on sunny views from the park's hills. If drizzle sets in, Qingyan Ancient Town is a good fallback, with lanes and old buildings to duck into. A long exposed hike isn't much fun in cold, wet air.
Quieter, unless it's Spring Festival
January is winter, and it's not one of Guiyang's best months. March and November are the times to aim for. The weeks either side don't help much, since December and February are cool and damp too. Still, January is generally quieter than the busier spring and autumn periods, and accommodation can cost less. New Year's Day brings a short holiday, but the bigger shift is Spring Festival. Its date moves, and it can fall in January. When it does, transport gets busy and some smaller businesses may close.
If crowds bother you, pick a January week that doesn't overlap with Spring Festival. For a holiday visit, expect more people passing through Guiyang, not just sightseeing in town. If the weather matters more than the city itself, Qujing, about 318 km away, rates Excellent this month, and Liupanshui and Liuzhou are both Good.
Make damp days work
Use a wet day for the Guizhou Provincial Museum, then warm up with Guizhou sour soup fish, a local favourite. For a practical stop, head to Jiaxiu Pavilion near the Nanming River. It's an easy city-centre visit, so you can cut it short if the weather turns.
Travelling with kids? Qianling Park's monkeys are a fun draw, but keep snacks tucked away and don't approach or feed them. If you're set on a day trip to Qingyan, check the forecast first, since its old stone lanes can be slippery in rain. January suits a flexible city break better than a trip built around long days outdoors.
