When to go to Guiyang: a seasonal guide
Spring and autumn are the sweet spots
March and November score best here, and it's easy to see why. Days reach the high teens, nights are cool, and you can walk around without sweating or shivering. Guiyang sits high up, at over 1,000 metres, so it stays milder than most of southern China.
Don't expect blue skies, though. Guiyang is famously cloudy, and even the best months get only two or three hours of sun a day. Think soft grey light and damp air. It suits a slow wander through Qianling Park, where wild macaques roam the hillside, or an afternoon in the teahouses around Jiaxiu Pavilion on the Nanming River.
April and October are good too, just wetter. Rain falls on about half the days, but it's often light drizzle.
Summer: cool for China, but very wet
Guiyang markets itself as a summer escape, and there's truth in that. July and August top out at 28°C, while much of the country is far hotter. Evenings feel pleasant.
The catch is the rain. May and June are the wettest months, and June is the worst, with rain on 22 days. Those two months get a poor rating from us. July and August are drier and brighter, so they're the better summer pick.
Summer is also high season for domestic tourists escaping the heat, and school holidays bring families to Huangguoshu Waterfall and the Xijiang Miao village area. The waterfall is at its most powerful after heavy rain, so you'll get a great show. Roads and viewing platforms get busy, though. Go on a weekday if you can.
Winter and festival timing
December and January are the driest, quietest stretch, but damp and chilly. Highs sit around 10 to 12°C, and with few sunny hours, buildings often feel colder indoors than out. It's a decent time if you want empty sights and a bowl of hot sour fish soup, a Guizhou classic.
Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February, is the big exception. Many locals travel, some shops close, and transport fills up. February otherwise rates Good and is calm.
For culture, look to the Miao and Dong communities in the surrounding region. The Sisters' Meal Festival, a Miao celebration, falls in spring, and the Torch Festival of the Yi people is in summer. Exact dates shift each year, so check before you lock in your trip.
If you want one simple answer, aim for March or November, and bring a rain jacket anyway.
