Visiting Kaohsiung in June
June: sticky and wet
June feels hot and close, even after sunset. Highs reach 30°C and humidity sits at 83%, so a long walk around the city can leave you worn out. Rain falls on 23 days, and it often gets in the way of outdoor plans. May is actually a little drier, with less rain than June, while July is almost as wet, so the rainy stretch runs through the early summer months.
Because of that, it helps to plan around the weather. You can still spend time at indoor sights like the National Museum of Taiwan History or stop in at the Dome of Light at Formosa Boulevard Station. Save long walks around Lotus Pond or time on Cijin Beach for a break in the rain, and skip exposed hikes if the forecast looks unsettled.
Festivals and crowds
The Kaohsiung Dragon Boat Festival is often held in June on the Love River, though its date shifts with the lunar calendar. It brings races and crowds along the river, so expect busy paths near the event.
If you hate crowds, June is usually calmer than the December-to-March period, which is the best time to visit Kaohsiung. June also comes before the main summer school-holiday rush in July, so hotels and attractions may be quieter. Just don't expect crisp sightseeing weather, because frequent rain can slow a day out.
Making the most of it
Travelling with kids? Keep a flexible plan, with indoor stops ready when showers interrupt a visit to Pier-2 Art Center or the waterfront.
One local trick is to take the MRT to Formosa Boulevard Station and see its Dome of Light when rain catches you out. For Cijin, take the ferry from Gushan when the weather is settled, since the crossing is exposed and beach time is less fun in heavy rain. Kaohsiung's best weather comes later in the year, so June suits you best if you're happy to build your days around showers.
