Visiting Taipei in June
June: hot, damp days
June feels sticky from morning onwards. The high reaches 30°C, and rain falls on 24 days, often in heavy showers. Cloud cover and humidity can make long walks tiring, so keep outdoor sightseeing flexible. The rain is the main reason June scores so low, and if you can choose, November to March is far more comfortable.
Taipei 101, the National Palace Museum and the underground shops around Taipei Main Station work well when showers roll in. Save a walk along the Tamsui River for a clearer spell. Hiking Elephant Mountain can be slippery after rain, and its exposed steps feel tough in the heat.
Festivals and local plans
The Dragon Boat Festival sometimes falls in June. When it does, you can watch races at Dajia Riverside Park and try zongzi, sticky rice parcels wrapped in leaves. The festival follows the lunar calendar, so its date changes each year.
If you hate crowds, June is usually calmer than the popular November-to-March season. It's also outside Taiwan's main summer school break, which starts in July. Hotels and flights can cost less than in the cooler peak months, though holiday weekends may bring more local visitors.
Make rainy spells work
With only a little sunshine on an average day, don't build your visit around clear skies. Keep the National Palace Museum or Taipei 101 for wet afternoons, then head outdoors when the rain eases. Rain is heavy in June, at 289 mm, which is more than in May and July, so expect showers to interrupt your plans more often than not.
Travelling with kids? Taipei Main Station's underground malls give you room to eat and browse without crossing wet streets. For a local snack, look for warm zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival. Check the event date before making it a reason for your trip.
